Teaching Tip for Today:

Using Musical SuitesTM in Studio

Teaching Tip for Today

Musical SuitesTM isn't just for games.  In this instructional example, cards from the dynamics suit are used to put dynamic range into context for elementary students.  Have a set of the six dynamics cards from the card deck ready to go:

Step 1:  For review (and as-needed), the student takes the dynamic card set and orders it appropriately.

Step 2:  The student identifies all dynamics used throughout the piece of study.  In this example, the student must be keenly aware that he/she needs to "leave room" for pianissimo at the close.

Step 3:  The student removes the dynamics not used in the piece from the set.  Now discuss the range of dynamics the composer has intended for the piece.  Have the student play an example of each level as he/she will apply it to the study piece in practice.  Help the student define arm weight/hand posture/execution to be used at each level.

Why Musical SuitesTM and not flashcards?  Of course, typical flashcards can be used in this teaching example.  The cards of Musical SuitesTM, however, are just more fun: plain and simple.  The artwork is iconic, the colors are vibrant and the playing card stock makes them easy to manipulate at the keyboard: nevermind all the other fun games that can be played with the deck.  Students who have purchased the deck for the game play can use them at home as a study tool too, once shown how.
